Concussion Management & the 21‑Day Return‑to‑Play Process

Understanding Concussion in Sport

Navigating a concussion can be tricky—especially for youth and community sport athletes. At Pivot Sports Performance, we follow the latest Australian concussion guidelines, which mandate a minimum 21‑day graduated return‑to‑play (RTP) protocol for community athletes.

This approach keeps athletes safe and ensures proper recovery before resuming contact sport.

Day 0 and the First 48 Hours

As soon as a concussion is suspected, the athlete must be removed from play and start a short period of relative rest (24–48 hours).

  • Avoid screen time and cognitive overload

  • Light walking and gentle daily activity only

  • No training or contact sport

This short recovery window helps the brain begin healing safely.

Gradual Recovery Phase (Days 2–14)

After the initial rest period, athletes begin a staged recovery process:

  1. Light aerobic activity – gentle cycling or walking

  2. Sport-specific exercise – without risk of head impact

  3. Non-contact training drills – controlled intensity

  4. Full training – after medical clearance

Each stage lasts at least 24 hours, and symptoms must be absent before progression.

Full Return to Play – 21 Days Minimum

For youth and community athletes, full contact sport can resume no earlier than 21 days post‑concussion, and only after:

  • All stages of RTP are completed symptom‑free

  • A qualified healthcare professional provides clearance

  • Strength, balance, and cognitive testing return to baseline

Returning too soon can increase the risk of repeat concussion or more serious complications.
