Our Physios Have Been Trusted By

The High-Performance Approach to ACL Rehab

Traditional rehab models used by Physios, Osteos, Chiros, and Myotherapists often fall short for athletes. These outdated, siloed approaches were phased out by professional sporting organisations over two decades ago. Today, elite sport uses an integrated performance model, where physiotherapists work alongside Strength & Conditioning Coaches, Sports Scientists, and Coaching Staff to keep athletes progressing — even through injury. The goal is simple: avoid deconditioning, maintain momentum, and return stronger.

At Pivot Sports Performance in Bundoora, we apply this elite-level model to every athlete we work with — from grassroots to high-performance. Our ACL rehabilitation programs are built around sport-specific demands, progressive loading, and clear return-to-play benchmarks. Whether your injury happened on the field, court, or track, our experienced physios are here to guide your recovery and get you back in the game — faster and safer.

Why Early ACL Rehab Matters

Starting physiotherapy early after an ACL injury is crucial.

Delayed rehab increases your risk of:

Image

Ongoing swelling and stiffness

Without early intervention, fluid and inflammation can persist in the knee joint, leading to reduced mobility and discomfort. This makes regaining full range of motion harder and slows the entire recovery process.

Image

Muscle wasting (especially quadriceps)

After an ACL injury, the quadriceps muscle often weakens rapidly due to disuse and pain. If not addressed early, this muscle loss can be difficult to reverse and significantly affects knee stability and performance.

Image

Poor movement patterns

Delaying rehab can cause compensations in how you walk, run, and move. These altered patterns can place extra stress on other joints and muscles, increasing the risk of secondary injuries.

Image

Increased chance of re-injury

Without guided strength and control training, the knee remains vulnerable. Athletes returning to sport too soon without meeting key rehab milestones face a much higher risk of re-tearing the ACL or injuring the other knee.

Image

Delays in returning to sport or normal activity

The longer rehab is delayed, the longer it typically takes to rebuild strength, confidence, and function. This means extended time away from training, competition, or team environments.

ACL Rehab FAQs

What are common symptoms of an ACL Injury?

An ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) injury typically occurs during sudden changes in direction, landing awkwardly, or direct impact to the knee.

Symptoms often include:

  • A popping sensation at the time of injury

  • Immediate swelling within the first 6 hours

  • Instability or “giving way” of the knee

  • Difficulty walking or bending the knee

  • Pain during weight-bearing or twisting movements

FAQ image

Do I need a scan first?

Not always. Our physios can often diagnose ACL injuries without a scan. However, we may refer you for an MRI to confirm the injury and rule out other damage.

FAQ image

Do you treat post-surgery ACLs?

Absolutely. We work closely with orthopaedic surgeons and will help you safely progress from early post-op care all the way to return-to-play testing.

FAQ image

How long does ACL rehab take?

It depends on whether you have surgery. Non-surgical ACL rehab can take 3–6 months, while post-surgical rehab typically takes 9–12 months for a full return to high-level sport.
