What Are Hip Flexor & Quad Injuries?
These injuries occur from sprinting, kicking, or overstretching under load. The rectus femoris (part of the quad) and iliopsoas (hip flexor) are most commonly involved.
Sharp increases in sprinting volume
Increase in kicking load
Poorly planned training programs
Previous hip flexor strain
Poor hip extension range
Pain at the front of the hip or thigh
Reduced kicking power or sprinting speed
Tightness with high-knee running or deceleration
Difficulty lifting the leg during explosive movement

ATHLETES RETURNED TO SPORT
ATHLETE REHAB HOURS COMPLETED
Many hip flexor and quad injuries — particularly those in kicking and sprinting sports — are poorly managed. Without a structured and progressive rehab plan:
Structured rehab helps
High Performance Training Throughout Your Entire Season.
Isolated Hip Flexor & Quad Loading
We start by targeting the injured muscle directly to rebuild load tolerance:
Isometric loading helps reduce pain and reintroduce strength without aggravation
Concentric exercises are used to retrain movement patterns and restore basic force production
Eccentric loading — where the muscle lengthens under tension — is critical for injury prevention and late-stage rehab
We carefully tailor this progression based on the specific location of the strain — whether it’s rectus femoris, iliopsoas, or another hip flexor.
Sprint Drills & Change of Direction Progressions
Hip and quad strains often happen during acceleration or kicking under fatigue. That’s why we prioritise:
Sprint technique drills: to build proper posture and force direction.
Acceleration mechanics to reduce overstriding and anterior chain overload.
COD progressions: starting with deceleration control and building into cutting, lateral movement, and reactive agility patterns.
This phase prepares athletes for real-game speed — not just jogging in straight lines.
Gym-Based Programming for Strength & Force Absorption
Our rehab is built around the gym. Every athlete completes a tailored strength program focused on:
Unilateral leg strength
Core and trunk stability to support hip mechanics during change of direction
Jump and landing drills to improve ground reaction force absorption
This ensures you’re strong enough to run, cut, and kick without placing excessive strain on healing tissues.
Running Technique & Video Feedback
Often, quad and hip flexor injuries are a symptom of poor sprint mechanics. We coach sprint form with real-time video analysis, breaking down:
Hip positioning
Trunk angle
Overstriding or excessive anterior pelvic tilt
Our goal isn’t just to get you pain-free — it’s to make you more efficient and powerful than before you got injured

If via email, please provide any imaging or reports that you have so we can provide you with clear advice.
We will discuss where you are at in your rehab over the phone prior to attending your first appointment
Assessment of your hip flexor to determine your injury and your rehab plan.
We may refer you to additional scans or a surgical opinion at this point.
Although it is not vital to be a member to work with us, it is highly recommended for a fast rehab and to get the best bang for your buck.

Recovery time depends on the grade of the strain and the demands of your sport.
Grade I (mild): 1–2 weeks
Grade II (moderate): 3–5 weeks
Grade III (severe or complete tear): 6+ weeks and may require imaging or longer progressive loading
At Pivot, we don’t use time alone to guide return to play. We track strength symmetry, running capacity, and kicking mechanics to make sure you’re truly ready for sport — not just pain-free walking around.
Pain alone isn’t the only factor we assess. In some cases, low-level discomfort during rehab is expected — but return to sport should only happen once you’ve passed:
Full strength and range of motion benchmarks
Sprint and kicking clearance tests
Confidence under high-speed and fatigue conditions
Your physiotherapist at Pivot Bundoora will guide these decisions, so your return is safe, objective, and sport-ready.
Yes — we work with sprinters, jumpers, hurdlers, and kicking athletes across a range of sports. Whether you’re chasing 100m PBs, returning to AFL after a high-speed quad strain, or coming off a long jump injury, we provide sport-specific strength and running progressions tailored to your code and event.
At the end of your initial treatment, your action plan will be discussed and a expected recovery time will be established. If you have not recovered in that time, lived up to the expectations and there have been no unforeseen events, we will continue to rehabilitate your injury without additional charge!
