What Is A PCL Injury?
The PCL is one of the key stabilising ligaments in the knee, preventing the tibia (shin bone) from sliding backward under the femur. It’s typically injured during:
- Falls onto a bent knee
- Hyperextension injuries during sprinting
- Collisions or awkward landings
- Direct force to the front of the shin
PCL injuries may be isolated or part of more complex multi-ligament trauma.
- Pain and swelling behind the knee
- Discomfort or buckling when descending stairs
- Hesitation with acceleration or downhill running
- Reduced control during agility work or deceleration
- Ongoing quad weakness or imbalance

ATHLETE REHAB HOURS COMPLETED
PCL injuries often get overlooked — especially partial tears — leading to chronic instability, compensation issues, and increased risk of overload on the knee joint.
At Pivot Ringwood, we go beyond rest and general rehab. We use structured testing, movement coaching, and progressive overload to:
- Prevent quad wasting and long-term imbalance
- Improve proprioception and agility under fatigue
- Build repeatable, sport-ready strength and control

No. Most PCL injuries — even moderate tears — can be treated conservatively with structured rehab and do not require surgical intervention.
Mild injuries may return within 6–8 weeks. Moderate to severe or multi-ligament cases may take 12+ weeks depending on sport, position, and rehab progression.
Yes. We work with both surgical and non-surgical PCL cases, including professional and community-level athletes.
