Identifying a Shoulder Dislocation: Signs & How We Diagnose It

Dislocated shoulders typically result from high-impact collisions, awkward landings, or uncontrolled overhead movement — especially in contact and throwing sports.

Common symptoms include:
- Sudden, intense shoulder pain

- Deformed appearance or “dropped” arm

- Inability to lift or rotate the arm

- Pins and needles or numbness in the arm

- Ongoing looseness or fear of movement

Diagnosis may involve X-rays (to rule out fractures) and an MRI if we suspect soft tissue damage like a labral tear. Our experienced physiotherapists in Ringwood will perform a detailed shoulder stability assessment and develop your rehab plan accordingly.

Shoulder Dislocations Often Come With More Than One Injury

We regularly see shoulder dislocations complicated by additional structural damage, which may alter your rehab or require surgical input. These include:

Bankart Lesions: Tearing of the labrum from the glenoid socket

Hill-Sachs Lesions: Indentations in the humeral head due to dislocation impact

SLAP Tears: Superior labrum injuries common in throwing and overhead sports

General Labral Tears: Affecting shoulder stability and motion

Fractures: Including bony Bankart or glenoid rim fractures

Our Ringwood physios are trained to detect these and refer you for further imaging or surgical review if necessary.

Do You Need Surgery After a Shoulder Dislocation?

Surgical intervention is typically considered if the shoulder remains unstable after the initial dislocation — especially in younger, high-contact athletes.

Common procedures include:

Anterior Stabilisation (Bankart Repair)

A minimally invasive procedure to reattach the torn labrum and tighten the joint capsule. Often recommended after repeated dislocations.

Latarjet Procedure

Used when bone loss contributes to instability. A portion of the coracoid bone is transferred to the front of the shoulder socket for added stability.

We work closely with post-op athletes to ensure a safe, progressive return to sport after either procedure.

Why You Should Start Rehab Early

Delaying rehab after a shoulder dislocation increases your risk of long-term instability and re-injury. Our clients in Ringwood benefit from early intervention that focuses on:

Image

Restoring stability and control

The longer your shoulder remains weak, the higher your chance of redislocation — especially during contact or overhead sport.

Image

Avoiding stiffness and range loss

Shoulders can tighten quickly post-injury. Without proper guidance, you risk losing mobility which is hard to get back

Image

Rebuilding muscle and strength

Rotator cuff and scapular muscles weaken rapidly. Early activation prevents wasting and speeds up your return to the gym and then to training.

Image

Correcting movement patterns

After injury, many athletes develop poor compensations that increase injury risk elsewhere. These compensatory muscles normally take control and can be prime drivers of neck pain, shoulder pain or chest pain.

Image

Minimising time off sport

The faster you start, the sooner you can begin controlled training and reduce time away from competition.

Shoulder Dislocation Rehab FAQs

Do I need surgery after my first dislocation?

Not always. We often manage first-time dislocations with rehab alone. Repeat injuries, severe instability, or labral damage may require surgical consultation.Additionally, your age is considered when thinking about surgery as it is a risk factor for whether you are likely going to dislocate your shoulder again.

FAQ image

How long will rehab take after a shoulder dislocation?

It depends on the injury and sport. Non-surgical cases often take 8–12 weeks. Post-surgical or contact sport return may extend to 16+ weeks with full clearance testing.

FAQ image

Can I still lift or train during rehab?

Absolutely. We modify your program to maintain lower body and general conditioning — keeping you fit while your shoulder heals. You will still be able to do lower body strength and power training, bike or other cross training for conditioning, and opposite arm strength training.
